CREATION STORY

A STUDY OF THE CREATION STORY  Genesis 1:1-2:6 (KJV)  – One day as I was reading the Bible, the word, Character, seemed to jump out at me, and as I began pondering its meaning, I was led to the story of Creation and the idea of God’s agenda could be explored more thoroughly by calling them. “projects”.    Perhaps other concepts occur to you as you read this.  If so, please feel free to send me a comment to ponder further.  Hopefully, together we will all grow in understanding and knowledge of God’s Word.

GOD’S FIRST PROJECT  –  Chapter 1:1-2  In the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Now the earth was without form and void ,  darkness was upon the face of the deep.  The Spirit of God moved upon the face of waters.

LET’S THINK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE:
    • God created the heavens  and earth;
    • God “created” – not formed from pre-existing materials, but made out of nothing;
    • The Earth is an object and it was without form (shape) and void (empty);
    • Earth is the object,  the Heavens was everything else (outer space?)
    • There was only darkness, there was no light,
    • There was water, telling us that the temperature was above freezing;
    • God caused the Earth to form into a round shape or a ball;  God’s Law of Gravity,
    • Something solid and heavier than water, pulled together and formed the interior of the ball
    • the water in on the outside around the object (ball);
    • Definition of Character? – “to distinguish particular traits, to describe, to characterize”  (Webster’s one of many);
    • There was no Light and therefore, no Character, because Character is only revealed when there is light (because to see or distinguish particular traits requires “Light”).

 GOD’S SECOND PROJECT – Chapter 1:3-5  And God said, “Let there be light.” and there was light.  God saw the light, and that it was good, and God divided the light from the darkness.  5 God called the light “day” And darkness he called “night. An evening and the morning were the first day.

LET’S THINK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE
  •  In the beginning all was dark until God revealed His Glory (Light);
  • God created the Sun to give the light.  It is a fixed point that only shines;
  • The light reveals a round ball, Earth, floating in the heavens.  Earth’s Character is revealed;
  • Challenge:  How to divide the light from the darkness;
  • God caused the Earth to turn (rotate) creating the Law of Motion;
  • Once the earth begins turning, it continues until God changes it;
  • The Earth is turning (rotating) and as the sun shines on a fixed point on earth, there is light, and where it does not shine on the Earth there is no light (darkness), all within one turn (rotation);
  • God names the light, “day”, and the darkness, “night”, giving man a logical way to look at His creative work.
  • The word, light, gives day its character of brightness, and the absence of light gives Night its character of darkness.

GOD’S THIRD PROJECT – Chapter 1:6-8  And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.  And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.  And God called the firmament Heaven.  And the evening and the morning were the second day.

LET’S THINK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE
  • Water has three forms:  Liquid (water or wet), solid (ice), and gas (atmosphere);
  • Atmosphere (gas) separate the waters under the firmament, from waters which were above the firmament (heavens?);
  •  God called the firmament, Heaven.  Is this what we call outer space?
  • God was working from the unknown (darkness), to the known.

GOD’S FOURTH PROJECT – Chapter 1:9-10  And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.   And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called the Seas: and God saw that it was good.

LET’S THINK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE
  •  Verse 1:2 states that the earth was without form (Character),
  • So God let the dry land appear,
  • there was the Law of Gravity.
  • So what physical form did it have?  It was round.
  • Round is a stable shape, a physical character
  • So we have a round ball that has water and a hard stable shape.
  • God pushed in places on the hard shape creating some big holes, or dents, and the water rushed into fill them up;
  • Some of the hard stuff went up (mountains)
  • and some went down (deep valleys in the ocean that are as deep as the high spot is high – Mt. Everest);
  • Now we have two new physical characteristics, deep and high.
  • God could see them and he liked them;
  • God gave more names, the water He called” Seas”, and the solid parts He called “Land”;
  • and the whole “round” ball was called “Earth”.

 Chapter 1:11-12  And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.  And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.   And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day.

LET’S THINK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE
  •  Up to this point the earth was all inorganic; it had no life in it,
  • so God created Life, things that grow. [Life=things that grow.] A new component – organic.
  • These verses state God’s plan with details.  Each plant had its own character, so the earth became crowded with more character;
  • But what is seed?  The seed, when planted in the ground [earth], Grows.  The seed has life in it.  So the seed itself has character, but, also the character of life.
  • God saw their character and He liked it.

GOD’S FIFTH PROJECT – Chapter 1:14-18  And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.  And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.  And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.   And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.   And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

LET’S THINK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE
  • Lights in outer space;
  • Signs – a regular pattern that can be seen and recorded;
  • Signs – which are necessary for navigation;
  • The sun, moon and earth each have their own character;
  • The character of Day.  How is it arrived at?  Three possibilities:
    • 1 The Earth goes around the sun,
    • 2 The son goes around the earth,
    • 3 The earth turns like a top, a full turn equals one Day.
  • #3 is the correct choice
  • The earth goes around the sun and one full trip is called a year.  A very accurate measure.
  • The Moon rotates around the Earth and that time is called a month.
  • God has now created time.

GOD’S SIXTH PROJECT – Chapter 1:20-23  And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.  And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.  And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.  And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

LET’S THINK ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE
  • Up to this point we have had only plant life, but plants are fixed, they don’t move around;
  • God now creates living creatures that move around in the water and the air.
  • These creatures need to eat and breathe,
  • God has provided green plants and seeds for food;
  • God provides air for breathing, for life.

GOD’S SEVENTH PROJECT – Chapter 1:25-2:6  And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.  And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.   And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.   And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.  And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.  And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.  thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.  And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.  And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

  • Thus, each and every thing, plant, animal, planet, etc, was give his/her own character, visual and functional, and God saw liked what he saw.
